Bert Carpenter: A Retrospective

More than sixty years in the artistic career of Bert Carpenter --
Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro
-- will be examined in Bert Carpenter: A Retrospective, which opens
at St. John's Museum of Art. Nearly fifty works displaying the vibrant
colors and textures of a lifetime dedicated to the details of realism will
be on display in the Hughes Gallery, including still lifes, portraits, landscapes
and mythological scenes. Prominent in the exhibition will be the large-scale
series of figures for which Carpenter is renown. (left:

A preview reception for Bert Carpenter: A Retrospective
will be held Thursday, Sept. 22, 7-9 p.m. in the Hughes Gallery and
will include refreshments. Admission to the opening reception is $2
for museum members and $5 for the general public.
Born in Billings, Montana in 1920, Bert Carpenter studied
art at Stanford University and earned his Ph.D. in art history at Columbia
University. After teaching at the University of Hawaii, he was asked
to join the art faculty of UNC Greensboro in 1963 and also served as head
of the school's art department. During the 1970s he became director
of the university's Weatherspoon Art Gallery, where he has been instrumental
in developing a collection of national prominence.
The works on display in Bert Carpenter: A Retrospective
include earlier portraits and self-portraits from the 1930s and 1940s, and
continue through to the still-lifes and series in the 1980s such as "Hooded,
Standing, Wrapped." The exhibition is organized by the Weatherspoon
Art Gallery.
