The Soul of the Horse

 

The Kentucky Horse Park Photo Gallery will present the works of the world-renowned German photographer, Peter Thomann, from August 21, 1998 to August 22, 1999. The Soul of the Horse is a collection of over 40 black and white photographs taken by Mr. Thomann over a 35 year period in locations all over the world. The August 21st opening of The Soul of the Horse at the Kentucky Horse Park marks the start of its U.S. Tour. This collection has previously been shown in over 14 cities throughout Europe.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is Mr. Thomann's photograph "Mare with Foal," which he took in 1963 near Dulmen:, Gennany and for which he won the 1963 World Press Photo Award. The Image is recognized around the world and in 1978 was used to develop the Kentucky IIorse Park logo.

Peter Thomann was born in 1940 in Berlin. He studied at the Folkwang School of Design under Prof Otto Steinert passing his photojournalism exam in 1965. Since 1968 he has worked as a staff photographer for Stern, a prominent European magazine and is a nzember of the German Photographic Academy. Over the years, Mr. Thomann has won several international awards, including the 1963 World Press Photo Award, the 1965 Young German Photographers Award, the World Press Photo Award third place prize in 1983 and the 1986 Emmendingen, Germany Cultural Award. His passion is to photograph horses in different situations both in the wild and in relationship with man. Mr. Thomann's photographs are in internationaI museums and private collections all over the world.

The exhibition is housed in the Park's Visitors Information Center, and is included with admission to the Park. The Kentucky Horse Park is located on I-75, at exit 120, four miles north of Lexington.
