& THEIR CONTEMPORARIES

Organized around the Museum's portraits by the Peale family dynasty, the exhibition has been augmented by strategic loans of Peale portraits from private and public collections and by portraits by contemporary artists who were competing with the Peale family for commissions.

Many of the paintings have never been exhibited publicly before and it is a good opportunity to get an overview of portraiture in the mid-Atlantic region from the Revolutionary era to the pre-Civil War period.

One of the highlights is a porti·ait of Gen. Otho Holland Williams (1749)-1799) by Charles Willson Peale, on loan from The Maryland Society of the Cincinnati. The founder of Williamsport, Williams was the son of Joseph and Prudence Williams who settled in Washington County in 1750. Peale painted the portrait in 1784 of the Revolutionary hero when he was serving as Collector of the Port of Baltimore.

Besides portraits by Charles Willson, Anna Claypoole, Sarah Miriam, Rembrandt, Harriet Cany, Raphaelle, Rubens and Mary Jane Peale, there will be paintings by Joshua Johnson, Jacob Eichholtz, and John Beale Bordley.
