"A Splendid Little War" The Spanish-American War, 1898: The Artists' Perspective

To commemorate the centennial of the Spanish-American War, the Flagler Museum is presenting a major exhibition, "A Splendid Little War" The Spanish-American War, 1898: The Artists' Perspective, from January 5 through March 3, 1339. Curated by the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection at Brown University Library in 1998, the exhibition explores the artistic interpretation of the war as demonstrated by the artists and illustrators who covered it for the illustrated press. The Spanish-American War was extensively documented by artists and correspondents who recorded military preparations, violent: battles, and the aftermath of the war.

The exhibition consists of approximately 50 original drawings, water-colors, and prints by notable artists such as William Glackens, Howard Chandler Christy, Thure de Thulstrup, and Henry Reuterdahl. The majority of the pictures come from the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection and the collection of Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf, while others are on loan from the Museum of the City of New York. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated 64-page catalogue which documents the artistry of the work and provides biographical information on the artists. The catalogue also includes essays, a brief chronology of the war, and eye-witness accounts by British artist Douglas Macpherson. Related objects will also be on exhibit, such as a Gatling Gun, a model of the U.S.S. Maine, war artifacts, and an embroidered painting of Henry Flagler's yacht, Alicia, which was used in the war.

When it was completed in 1902, Whitehall, Henry Flagler's Gilded Age estate in Palm Beach, was hailed by the New York Herald as the "Taj Mahal of North America." Today, Whitehall is open to the public as the Flagler Museum. The Museum is located at One Whitehall Way, Palm Beach and is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon until 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12.
