The C.M. Russell
Museum has hired Tom Maytham of Denver, Colorado as its executive director,
announced Museum board president Sheila Buchanan on August 16, 1999. He
has more than 43 years of art and museum experience, including head of the
department of paintings, Boston Museum of Fine Arts; associate and acting
director of the Seattle Art Museum; and director of the Denver Art Museum.
Maytham has owned an arts consulting business for the past several years.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History of Art from Williams College
and a Master of Arts degree from Yale University, also in History of Art.
Maytham's position as executive director may be short term as the Museum continues to search for a long term candidate. "The board of directors is impressed with Mr. Maytham's capabilities and credentials, and he has our full confidence. We are very fortunate to have a person of Mr. Maytham's stature to guide our Museum. Continuing our search will allow Mr. Maytham to consider the possibility of staying with us on a long term basis, while providing the guidance we need in the meantime," said John Stephenson, chairman of the Museum search committee and past board president.
Responsibilities for the new executive director will include general management and operations of the Museum, leadership in the ongoing construction of the Museum, evaluation of programs and projects, and future planning.
