The original 11,500 square foot building for the Yellowstone Art Museum housed the Yellowstone County Jail prior to the founding of Yellowstone Art Center in 1964, the predecessor of the Museum. In 1998 the Museum completed a 25,000 addition, causing the Yellowstone Art Museum to become the premier museum of contemporary art in the Rocky Mountain West.
