Manuel Neri, artist-in-residence at Boston University

Manuel Neri, a sculptor of international reputation, was artist-in-residence at the School for the Arts at Boston University, January 29, 30 and 31, 1999. The residency began with a lecture January 29 and continued through the weekend with master classes for visual arts students.

Neri was joined for the lecture by Mary Julia Klimenko, a poet who has collaborated with him and served as his model since the early 1970s.

The only sculptor associated with the Bay Area Figurative Artists of the 1950s and 60s, Neri is best known for his textured and sometimes partially painted female nudes in plaster, marble, and bronze. He has been featured worldwide in numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums, and has received major commissions, grants, and awards, including a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1979. The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, mounted several touring exhibitions of both his sculpture and drawings over the past few years. An exhibition of the sculptor's recent work was just completed at the Charles Cowles Gallery in New York.
