Summer 1999 Exhibitions from the Anchorage Museum of History and Art Collection

Summer 1999 exhibitions from the Anchorage Museum of History and Art collection are designed to help visitors learn about Alaska history, its people, and landscape. Resource Library readers may particularly enjoy three exhibits:

ART OF THE FAR NORTH, on view in Galleries 1-6, includes works of art by a diverse group of artists who have drawn and painted the landscape and people of the Far North since the time of the early European and American explorers to the present. The galleries feature the themes of exploration, landscape, lifestyles, portraits, and crafts. Gallery 3 is devoted exclusively to the works of Sydney Laurence, Alaska's best-known painter.

CONTEMPORARY ALASKA NATIVE ART from the Museum collection is on view in Gallery 7. The show features the work of the most influential Alaska Native artists over the last 30 years. Many different styles and materials, from traditional pieces that use wood, fur, ivory, and bone to modern materials such as aluminum, steel, and plastic, are on display.

THE ALASKA GALLERY, the largest display of Alaska history in the state, depicts the history of the peopling of Alaska to the present. Miniature dioramas show Native subsistence lifestyles prior to European contact. Collections of Aleut, Eskimo, Tlingit, Haida , and Athapaskan materials portray the themes of housing, clothing, transportation, and celebrations. European contact is presented chronologically as each new wave of people came to Alaska seeking riches, with special emphasis on the Russian America Period, New England whaling, gold mining, the building of the railroad, fishing, timber, World War II, statehood, and contemporary Alaska, including the oil pipeline.
