American Naïve Paintings: The Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch Collection
William Matthew Prior, attributed to (1806-1873), Baby in Pink and White (Little Laney in Pink and White Dress), oil on canvas, c. 1840, Gift of Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch, Flint Institute of Arts
American Naïve Paintings: The Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch Collection is a survey of 40 paintings done in America from about 1800 to 1870. The work is all in the collection of the Flint Institute of Arts in Flint, Michigan. The exhibition will be on view in the West Main Gallery from July 24 to September 12, 1999.
All the work in this exhibition was done by folk artists, that is, artists who had little or no training in the arts. A variety of subjects are featured in the exhibition including portraits (like the charming portrait of a young child pictured here), pastoral and imaginary landscapes (like Erastus Salsbury Field's fabulous painting of the Taj Mahal) and genre subjects (like a humorous painting of a man riding a steam-driven tricycle).
Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch were avid collectors of folk art earlier in this century. Not only did they give a portion of their collection to the Flint Institute of Arts, but in 1953 donated an important group of works to the National Gallery of Art. Further, they lent many of their works to a variety of important exhibitions on folk art.
