Imperiled Landscapes - Endangered Legends:
Photographs by Lynn Hyman Butler
April 10 - June 20, 1999
Lynn Butler has pioneered a new and
highly personal method of shooting hypnotic color photographs from 
horseback. A slow shutter speed and the motion of the horse combine
to create images of arrested motion that are truly impressionistic, a feeling
that she heightens by manipulating color so that it becomes particularly
intense. Butler photographs the countryside and cultures she fears are endangered,
with an eye honed by her love of horses and the places and landscape they
inhabit. The exhibition includes her Legend of Sleepy Hollow series,
created around Tarrytown -- the location of that legend, the wild horses
of the Camargue in southeastern France, Native Americans, and the Amish.
The exhibition will be installed in two adjacent galleries.
The first gallery will be installed with Butler's 
Cibachrome prints;
the second gallery will contain an installation of stereo images that utilize
the newest cutting-edge photographic technology to produce a series of mesmerizing
3-D images. The Norton Museum is pleased to be the first venue to exhibit
these stereo images. When viewed with the special glasses provided, the
photographs instantly appear to be three-dimensional; the landscapes inhabited
by ghostly horses and ethereal figures suddenly seem otherworldly.
Lynn Butler has been exhibiting her work nationally and
internationally for nearly two decades; her work has 
recently been included
in the prestigious touring Aperture exhibition Metamorphoses: Photography
in the Electronic Age. In addition, Butler's work is represented in
numerous public collections including the Brooklyn Museum; Ringling Museum
of Art, Sarasota, Florida; Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida;
New Orleans Museum of Art; Musee deElysee, Lausanne, Switzerland; Wichita
Museum; Portland Museum, Portland, Maine; and the Denver Museum of Art.
The exhibition is organized by the Norton Museum of Art,
West Palm Beach, Florida.
