California Art Club Forms First Regional Chapter in San Diego County

After ninety years of existence, the California Art Club has formed its very first regional chapter in San Diego County, under the Chairmanship of Artist Member Aaron F. St. John. Club members living in the region were invited to an organizational meeting in late September of 1998, which was enthusiastically attended, and within a week, the members were already meeting again at their very first Chapter "paint-out" - painting together on location "en plein air." They have met as a large group at least once every month since, with some members getting together in smaller groups to paint together more often, and their first group exhibition will be held at the Santa Ysabel Art Gallery in Santa Ysabel, California, March 27 through May 9, 1999.

Many of the members had not been able to attend CAC functions because of their distance from Pasadena, home of the club and hub of its activities. Chairman Aaron St. John had participated in several club paint-out competitions held in Los Angeles and Orange counties, including the well-known California Art Club Outdoor Painting Festival at Mission San Juan Capistrano sponsored by Joan Irvine Smith Fine Arts, Inc., and missed a regular experience at home of the unique comraderie and peer encouragement fostered among the Club members that is so rare in the very competitive art world. As a result, he approached club president Peter Adams with the idea of forming a Regional Chapter to extend the club's benefits to its outlying members and was given enthusiastic consent and support.

The San Diego Chapter is off to a strong start, with a local newsletter and regular events, thanks to the passion and dedication of its members, and hopes that it may be an inspiration for more regional chapters to come.

The San Diego Regional Chapter's objectives are as follows:
