The National Oil and Acrylic Painters' Society (NOAPS) EXHIBIT '98
An oil painting entitled "Julie," created by Dorian Vallejo of Montclair, New Jersey was selected to receive the prestigious $1,500 Founders Award at The National Oil and Acrylic Painters' Society (NOAPS) EXHIBIT '98, held November 8-22 at Columbia College Lake Campus, Osage Beach, Missouri.
M. Stephen Doherty, Editor-in-Chief, AMERICAN ARTIST magazine, New York, chose the Vallejo painting for the top award. He praised the painting as a work which conveys a "magical quality." Doherty indicated the artist had a "good understanding of how oil paint can convey light, and that the painting was not about a portrait but rather an emotional response with focus on the gaze which supports the emotional impact."
Other merit and commemorative awards, totaling more than $3,500, were presented to nine exceptional artists: Hal Ashmead - Rio Rancho, NM; Zhaoming Wu - Oakland, CA; Rick Johnson - Glen Ellyn, IL; Cheri Christensen - Bainbridge Island, WA; Lisa Fricker - Alpharetta, GA; Gail Morris - San Anselmo, CA; Susan Elmer - New York, NY; and Joy Elaine Praznik--Rocky River, OH. The special FAMILY DAY "Peoples Choice Award" was presented to Jean Stone of Yukon, OK.
For the 1998 exhibition 255 artists from 42 states and U.S. Military Overseas entered more than 600 paintings for recognition by the Society. The jury panel chose 81 paintings for display, and ten paintings received cash awards. Mr. Doherty praised NOAPS for a fine exhibit and commented, "NOAPS performs an important service when it provides this kind of opportunity for talented artists who are not already well known."
The NOAPS annual exhibit is open to all artists doing original painting in either oil or acrylics. The Society encourages artists to write for information and an application for EXHIBIT '99 by contacting:NOAPS; P.O. Box 676, Osage Beach, MO 65065.
