The National Academy, which was named prior to August, 2004 the National Academy of Design, was founded in 1825 "to sustain an association of artists for the purpose of instruction and exhibition." The National Academy is an honorary association of professional artists, a school of fines art and a museum. The National Academy has numbered among its members many of America's most prominent painters, sculptors, architects and printmakers. The National Academy's affiliated art school is named the National Academy School of Fine Arts and is the oldest art school in New York.

The initials "NA" after an artist's name signify the honor of being elected to be a National Academician. Elected by their peers, all National Academicians contribute examples of their work upon acceptance of this honor, thus building one of the most important and unique collections of 19th and 20th century American art. The Academy's holdings feature nearly 8,000 paintings, sculptures and works on paper. Within the National Academy's museum collection are over 2,000 paintings, 250 sculptures and 3,000 works on paper.
