Lone Star Still Lifes

April 11 - June 14, 2009

Still life paintings have been found on the walls of Egyptian tombs and at the ancient city of Pompeii. Admired in European and American art since the 17th century, still life paintings were especially popular in Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. (right: H. D. BUGBEE (1900-1963), Clarendon, Zinnias 1927, Oil on canvasboard, 12 x 16 inches. Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, H. D. Bugbee Estate)

Texas artists began painting still lifes in the 1830s. To illustrate the development and establishment of this art in Texas, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum presents Lone Star Still Lifes April 11 through June 14, 2009 in the Foran Galleries.

This exhibit will also examine Texas still life works through the Regionalist period of the 1930's. Expect to see work from artists including Robert J. Onderdonk, Alexandre Hogue, Florence McClung, H.D. Bugbee, Olive Vandruff, Emilio Caballero and Isabel Robinson.

The exhibition will include works from PPHM's collection as well as those borrowed from public and private collections. The curator for the exhibition is Michael Grauer.

Newsletter article for the exhibition

In Texas artists have been inspired to create still lifes since the 1830's. Lone Star Still Lifes, an exhibition April 11 through June 14 in the Foran Gallery, will focus upon the development and establishment of still life painting in Texas by European artists and immigrants in the 1860's.

This exhibit will also examine Texas still life works through the Regionalist period of the 1930's. Expect to see work from artists including Robert J Onderdonk, Alexandre Hogue, Florence McClung, H.D. Bugbee, Olive Vanderuff, Emilio Caballero and Isabel Robinson.

Original abstract from the curator

A still life is a work of art depicting inanimate, usually commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, plants and rocks) or man-made (drinking glasses, pottery, pipes, textiles, and so on) in an artificial setting. Still lifes allow the artist more flexibility in the layout of design aspects within a composition than do paintings of other types of subjects such as landscape or portraiture.

Still life paintings have been found on the walls of Egyptian tombs and at the ancient city of Pompeii. Admired in European and American art since the 17th century, still life paintings were especially popular in Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands. Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso in France painted many modern still lifes. In the United States, the Peale family in Philadelphia became well known for their still lifes and a distinct genre of trompe l'oeil (fool the eye) painting developed in the 19th century. In Texas, artists have been painting still lifes since the 1830s. "Lone Star Still Lifes" will examine the establishment of still life painting in the 1860s and 1870s with European immigrant artists and transplants such as Robert J. Onderdonk through the Regionalist painters of the 1930s, such as Alexandre Hogue and Florence McClung. Work by artists from the Texas Panhandle such as H. D. Bugbee, Olive Vandruff, Emilio Caballero, and Isabel Robinson, will be included. The exhibition will include works from the Museum's collection as well as those borrowed from public and private collections.
