Sculpture, with its inherent difficulty in shipping and handling, was never a heralded feature of the Society of Western Artists' exhibitions. Initially, sculptors were encouraged to submit photographs of their work for circuit venues other than that of their home chapter. By the 15th annual circuit, the executive board ruled that accepted sculpture could be determined by each venue, making the local committees responsible for the jury process. The 18th annual exhibition in Indianapolis lists no sculpture at all, neither actual pieces nor photographs of them.
