Contractor Relationship Information

Compensation for a fully processed text based on What the contractor does

Baseline charge:

TFAO estimates that a contractor may spend these amounts of time for baseline components. Elements include:
1. identification of copyright owner(s): .5 hours per article
2. permissions process: .5 hours per article
3. preparation of presentation package for TFAO: .5 hours per article
total = 1.5 hours per article @ hourly equivalent rate of $31.50. [see note 2]
TFAO pays a fixed amount of $47.25 for this component of a complete presentation package. The actual time spent by a contractor may be more or less than the above estimated amount.

OCR scanning, proofreading and formatting charge:

For OCR scanning TFAO will pay 52.5 cents per page and for proofreading and formatting 84 cents per 1,000 characters.
Spaces between words and characters are not counted as characters.

Hypothetical example:

The total charge for a 10,600 character (about 2,000 words) text, for example, would be:

52.5 cents x 8 pages = $4.20
84 cents per 1,000 characters x 10.6 = $8.90
total OCR scanning, proofreading and formatting = $13.10

$13.10 + $47.25 baseline charge = $60.35

Compensation for multiple articles

An author may have written more than one American Art Review article. If the TFAO director makes note of other articles on the "American Art Review study online worksheet" page for the article under study, the contractor and the director may discuss the merits of pursuit of permissions for the other articles or their related catalogue essays. As the American Art Review publication dates of other articles becomes closer to the present time, there is increased risk that the owners of the related catalogue essays will be reluctant to have the related catalogue essays reprinted. This is because the owners of the catalogues may still be actively marketing them.

If TFAO and the contractor agree that the contractor may pursue permissions from owners to republish specified American Art Review articles out of the study period (later than Volume X, December 1998), it is understood that TFAO:

If TFAO receives and approves a complete presentation package for an additional article under these circumstances then the full baseline charge payment at the rate of $47.25 is made to the contractor plus the OCR scanning, proofreading and formatting charge described above is also paid to the contractor.

Compensation for related catalogue essays

If TFAO and the contractor agree that the contractor may pursue permissions to republish a catalogue essay instead of an American Art Review article, and subsequently TFAO receives and approves a complete presentation package pursuant to the procedures described in Related catalogue essays and in parts 4 through 7 in What the contractor does, then the full baseline charge payment at the rate of $47.25 is made to the contractor for the catalogue essay plus the OCR scanning, proofreading and formatting charge described above is also paid to the contractor.

If an American Art Review article was previously published in Resource Library that was severely abridged, condensed or excerpted from a source catalogue essay, and then the contractor and TFAO agree that the contractor may pursue permissions for republishing the source catalogue essay in Resource Library, and subsequently TFAO receives and approves a complete presentation package pursuant to the procedures described in Related catalogue essays and in parts 4 through 7 in What the contractor does, then the full baseline charge payment at the rate of $47.25 is made to the contractor for the catalogue essay plus the OCR scanning, proofreading and formatting charge described above is also paid to the contractor. The compensation is deemed reasonable because new permissions are obtained for an essay with substantially increased and useful content and the new text is processed.

Sometimes a catalogue may have more than one essay. If the contractor and TFAO agree that the contractor may pursue permissions for republishing specified essays in a catalogue in addition to the source catalogue essay and subsequently TFAO receives and approves a complete presentation package for each additional essay pursuant to the procedures described in Related catalogue essays and in parts 4 through 7 in What the contractor does, then 1/2 of the regular baseline charge payment at the rate of $23.63 is made to the contractor for each of the additional catalogue essays plus the OCR scanning, proofreading and formatting charge described above is also paid to the contractor.

TFAO will compensate the contractor for either an approved complete presentation package for an American Art Review article or for an approved complete presentation package for a related catalogue essay. TFAO will not pay for or publish both texts.

All essays must contain a minimum of 600 words. Forewords are not included as approved texts.
