About the author

With Jen Heusel, Matt Backer co-curated the 2006 exhibition "Black Spirit": Works on Paper by Eldzier Cortor at the Indiana University Art Museum. Studying primarily under Dr. Sarah Burns, he received his Master of Arts Degree in 2005. He is currently researching for his dissertation in modern American art, as well as lecturing in American Studies and Art History at the University. His previous publications include "Pursuing Desire: A Lacanian Approach to the Paintings of Edward Hopper." Oculus: Journal for the History of Art [Indiana University] 5 (2002).
