Purposes of this index and study
The purposes of this index and study are to:
Notes:
1. American Art is published on paper by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Tel. 202-275-1625. The fine arts through America's history are the journal's primary focus, "but its scope encompasses all aspects of the nation's visual culture, including popular culture, public art, film, electronic multimedia, and decorative arts and crafts." Until 1991 the publication was known as as Smithsonian Studies in American Art. The University of Chicago Press Journals Division contains a list of articles in the publication from 1987-2003. Full text of recent issues is available online through American Art Electronic Edition, published by the University of Chicago. Back issues of American Art from Volume 1 through Volume 17 (1987-2003) are available from JSTOR. Online access to back issues is free to SAAM members. The study period for this publication is Spring 1987 (Vol. 1, No. 1) through Fall 2003 (Vol. 17, No. 3) and is limited to information for substantive essays concerning representational art.
American Art Journal (The) is published on paper by Kennedy Galleries and noted for its scholarly content, with an Editorial Board of distinguished American art scholars. Tel. 212.541-9600. It focuses on American art from the 17th century to the early 20th century. A complete list of essays from back issues including 1969 to 2001 is available in the publication's web site. American Art Review, ISSN 0092-1327, is published on paper and noted for its scholarly content by both senior authors and younger scholars. Tel 913.451.8801. The time period focus of American Art Review is from the Colonial era through 1970. The first issue of Volume 1 of the magazine was published in September, 1973. Publication was suspended with Volume 4 in November, 1978. Publication resumed with Volume V in the Summer of 1992 and continues to the present. In the 19th century there was a journal with a similar title, The American Art Review: A Journal Devoted to The Practice, Theory, History and Archaeology of Art edited by S.R. Koehler.
American Art Review provides a useful yardstick to measure annual scholarly output relating to museum exhibitions and other happenings concerning American art. Texts relate for the most part to contemporaneous museum exhibitions. The publication does not attempt, however, to cover all exhibits during a year. Since American Art Review editors are distinguished in the field of art history, the exhibits and contributing authors vetted by them for inclusion in the publication are of significance.
The listings for American Art Review presently include Volumes I through November-December 2007 (Volume XIX, Number 6) and may be limited to information for articles concerning representational art. For Volumes I-IV and for Volumes XI+ this TFAO index contains the names of included authors, titles of their essays, volume numbers and issue dates. Information for Volumes V through X is sometimes limited to relevant author names and American Art Review issue dates with titles of essays and volume numbers not cited. (see TFAO's related American Art Review Study Project . Volumes V through X are presently the core study period)
Art Bulletin (The) is published quarterly on paper by the College Art Association and was established in 1913 to publish original scholarly research in all areas of the history of art and architecture. The Art Bulletin is only available as a benefit of CAA membership. tel. 212/691-1051, ext. 12. The study period for this publication is September 1991 to June 2006. To date, TFAO has published hyperlinks to articles related primarily to American representational art published online through FindArticles for issues from November, 1996 through June, 2004 in TFAO's catalogue titled Articles and Essays Online, which contains hundreds of substantive texts published outside of Resource Library.
Art Journal is a quarterly journal published on paper by the College Art Association and was established in 1941 to "provide a forum for scholarship and visual exploration in the visual arts; to be a unique voice in the field as a peer-reviewed, professionally mediated forum for the arts; to operate in the spaces between commercial publishing, academic presses, and artist presses; to be pedagogically useful by making links between theoretical issues and their use in teaching at the college and university levels; to explore relationships among diverse forms of art practice and production, as well as among art making, art history, visual studies, theory, and criticism; to give voice and publication opportunity to artists, art historians, and other writers in the arts; to be responsive to issues of the moment in the arts, both nationally and globally; to focus on topics related to twentieth- and twenty-first-century concerns; to promote dialogue and debate." Art Journal is available as a benefit of membership in CAA or separately by subscription. tel. 212/691-1051. The study period for this publication is Spring 1993 to Summer 2006. To date, TFAO has published hyperlinks to articles related primarily to American representational art published online through FindArticles for issues from Winter 1994 through Spring, 2004 in TFAO's catalogue titled Articles and Essays Online, which contains hundreds of substantive texts published outside of Resource Library.
Magazine Antiques (The) is an international monthly art magazine published on paper covering architecture, interior design, and fine and decorative arts. Tel. 212.941.2800. 2. Resource Library, ISSN 1550-8420, is an online publication devoted to American representational art. The publication includes aspects of both a popular publication and a scholarly journal and maintains a balance between both emphases. Resource Library is published as a complimentary public service without a subscription fee by its nonprofit owner and publisher Traditional Fine Arts Organization. Resource Library's content time line spans the Colonial period to the present and covers significant artistic achievement in every state of the Union, while building an interconnected body of knowledge including, but not limited to, the relationships of American artists to their teachers in European and American art centers, schools and ateliers. The publication provides a comprehensive record of American museum exhibitions and evolving cultural emphases within its field on interest.
Since 1997 TFAO and Resource Library have maintained a record of many contemporaneous museum exhibitions throughout the United States by publication of calendars and related exhibition publicity articles.
In 1999 Resource Library added to its mission the publication of scholarly texts relating to contemporaneous museum exhibitions. Copyright holders of essays within catalogues accompanying selected exhibitions began to be contacted regarding permission to reprint the essays. Resource Library also began in 1999 to contact museums, other non-profit organizations and commercial publishers for permission to republish essays and articles from prior years. These inquiries led to republishing of articles and essays written as early as the beginning of the 20th century.
To search Resource Library contents and also the full TFAO website, click here. Complete texts within Resource Library are also fully indexable and searchable by Google and other search engines. Readers using search engines directly access the content in any Resource Library page without going through a "portal" page.
In some instances where authors are mentioned in Resource Library articles and no related essays are published in Resource Library, there are posted in this author index links to the Resource Library articles containing reference to the authors. Resource Library notations for American Art Review authors from Volumes V through X were located by means of keyword searches in the Fall of 2004. The author names were cross-referenced with notations concerning those authors found in Resource Library texts from 1997 to the that time.
3. This TFAO index continues to be updated. Individual index pages will be amended as TFAO adds content, corrects errors and adds sections for improved readability. Refreshing or reloading pages enables readers to view the latest updates. TFAO intends to broaden this study. Information concerning other American art magazines published on paper will be added as well as an extension of the time line of individual scholarly activity. Research into scholarship developed prior to study periods will be conducted. TFAO occasionally contacts institutions concerning their history of publication of scholarly materials. These inquiries lead to reprinting of articles and essays and filling in blanks in individual scholarly timelines.
For another author list, containing about 150 names, please see the author index for Imprint, a scholarly journal published twice yearly by the American Historical Print Collectors Society.
