Introduction and Methodology
In 2003 Traditional Fine Arts Organization (TFAO) initiated a listing of substantive texts published on the Web. [1]
Goals
The goals of this ongoing project are to:
Screening and selection
The first screen of texts is by word count. Generally, the listed articles, essays and other texts contain an arbitrary minimum of 600 words. Texts are then screened for two additional objective factors: they are available without charge to readers and are archived. Further selection is based on subjective factors such as contribution to the corpus of topical knowledge, overall readability, intellectual merit, and other factors. Museums are increasingly creating virtual exhibitions, which are listed when other criteria are met. Lists of brief captions for art objects in museum collections are excluded. Also excluded are descriptions of institutions and their services. Commercial book sellers and publishers are placing excerpts of books online, which are listed when other criteria are met.
Catalogue audit
As of 4/24/09 this catalogue has been audited through:
TFAO's audit of the link to a content page on a source's site, other than TFAO or Resource Library, may reveal that the link is broken. If broken, TFAO keeps the title of the prior content page and eliminates the link. A note is placed after the content title such as: (Link found expired as of 4/21/09 audit. Source site may contain this content via a revised URL)
From time to time TFAO may attempt to find the content with a broken link at another location on the source's site. This is done by using the advanced search feature on search engines such as Google, enabling searches for exact wording or phrases in a site. If the attempt is not successful, TFAO makes a note of the failed search. A note is placed after the content title such as: (4/27/09 advanced search failed to locate content on source's site)
TFAO believes that retention of the title of content that existed on a page with the broken link is important. The content may be:

Notes
1. Initial research for the list was conducted in November, 2003. Inquiry letters were sent to 233 art dealers from TFAO's database and 618 selected art librarians based on ARLIS membership. TFAO then conducted general searches using the Google and Teoma search engines, focusing on those digital libraries offering public access to texts. In November 2003 and October 2004, TFAO surveyed The Online Books Page of the University of Pennsylvania Library which lists over 20,000 free online books. Under the subjects category, 172 matches were found through the Library of Congress call number category "N:Fine Arts." Of the 172 matches, those concerning American representational art are included in this TFAO catalogue. Additional research and postings are added on an ongoing basis. Since the inception of the research project the web sites of approximately 650 museum and arts organizations listed as Resource Library sources in the Museums Index.and the Academies, Associations, Ateliers and Societies Index have been reviewed annually for qualifying texts.
2. Resource Library is an Internet-based publication devoted to American representational art. The publication includes aspects of both a popular magazine and a scholarly journal and maintains a balance between both emphases. Resource Library is published as a complimentary public service without a subscription fee by its nonprofit owner and publisher Traditional Fine Arts Organization. The content time line spans the Colonial period to the present and covers significant artistic and critical achievement in every state of the Union. The publication is building an interconnected body of knowledge including, but not limited to, the relationships of American artists to their teachers in foreign nations and America, the history of American art centers, schools, ateliers and museums, the evolution of methods and styles of artistic expression, and changing cultural emphases over time within its field on interest. Resource Library further provides a record of important exhibitions at non-profit venues.
3. Articles and essays listed on the following pages are preceded by a source link. For a museum listed in the Resource Library Museums Index, the source link is to the Resource Library page referring to that museum. For other sources the source link is to the source's home page on the Web.
