Masquerade and Revelation: A William Wolff Retrospective

 

The Hearst Art Gallery of Saint Mary's College is pleased to present color wood blocks, lithographs, etchings, paintings and drawings by William Wolff (born 1922), one of San Francisco's most gifted and humble artists. This exhibition is the first retrospective for the artist.

Nearly 100 prints, drawings arid paintings spanning more than fifty years of work will be on view from March 16 through April 21, 2002. The San Francisco native, who is generating considerable admiration and attention from a new generation of printmakers, was associated with the artists' group founded by the late Charles Griffin Farr; he studied printmaking with Dick Graf, Gordon Cook, Max Beckmann and Rupert Garcia and shared a studio with James Weeks. Before WWII, Wolff studied at the California School of Fine Arts, and later received B.A. and M.A. degrees from UC Berkeley. A reception honoring the artist will be held Sunday, March 17, 2002 from 2 until 4 pm. A 28 page, full-color, lavishly illustrated catalog accompanies the exhibition, with a 3,000 word essay by printmaker Art Hazelwood, editor of the journal of the California Society of Printmakers. The catalog's introduction states that the "... exhibition was drawn from works in the artist's collection, from a generous gift made to the Hearst Art Gallery, and from numerous public and private collections in the Bay Area and beyond. The Hearst Art Gallery intends that this exhibition will document William Wolff's distinguished career, while providing insight into the complex man behind the work. The exhibition was organized by Hazelwood and Julie Armistead, Hearst Art Gallery registrar.
