Jack Becker Appointed Director of the Museum of Art at Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art

Jack Becker will join Cheekwood as the director of the Museum of Art announced Jane Jerry, president of Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art, on October 31, 2001.

Becker has significant experience in the art museum field, most recently serving as curator of the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, Connecticut, the center of America's best known Impressionist art colony. Prior to joining the Griswold, Becker worked at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. He also held fellowships from the National Gallery of Art, the Henry Luce Foundation, and the Smithsonian Institution.

"Cheekwood is pleased to attract a museum director of Jack's caliber. We are confident he will bring great vision to the Museum of Art, as well as wonderful energy to an already strong arts community in Nashville," said Jerry. "Jack's interest in the painted landscape as well as the natural landscape, his experience in building a collection, and his skill in creating community collaborations and coalitions with other cultural institutions make him the ideal person to lead our Museum into its next phase of development."

Becker earned his BA in Art History at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and his Masters of Art History at the University of Delaware, where he is a PhD candidate in Art History.

Becker will be moving to Nashville and assuming his new duties January 1, 2002.
