The following essay was written by Barbara Ball Buff as a catalogue essay for the A Circle of Friends: Art Colonies of Cornish and Dublin exhibition which premiered March, 1985 at Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery and toured to Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, Dartmouth College and University of New Hampshire Art Gallery. The exhibition was organized by the University of New Hampshire Art Gallery and Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery at Keene State College and is reprinted with permission of the author.

About the author
Barbara Ball Buff is associated with the New-York Historical Society as Project Associate, 20th Century Fine Art, and is the former Collections Associate at the Museum of the City of New York. She wrote an article titled Bronxville: The Planned Community as Art Colony which appeared in The Westchester Historian in the Spring of 1990. The article was based upon the author's essay in the exhibition catalogue for "The Artists of Bronxville: 1890 - 1930," which was held at the Hudson River Museum October 14,1989, through January 14, 1990.
