Tell Me a Story -- Chapter I: Narrative Themes in Contemporary Fiber Arts

The Cahoon Museum of American Art will present the exhibition Tell Me a Story -- Chapter I: Narrative Themes in Contemporary Fiber Arts from Feb. 1 through March 24, 2001. Twenty-four of the country's most imaginative and innovative fiber artists were invited to exhibit one or two examples of their art. The show represents a diversity of techniques, subjects and styles. The common denominator is that each piece has a strong narrative component.

• Joan Aaronson of Brewster combines quilting and collage to relate personal stories;
• Susan Boardman of Nantucket creates embroideries that document events in the whaling history on Nantucket;
• Salley Mavor of Falmouth illustrates children's books with her embroidery and collage;
• Lucretia Romey of Orleans uses quilts to tell the stories of her extensive travels;
• Barbara Sparre of Brewster creates fanciful pictures of past events with her stumpwork, embroidery and appliqué

The fiber techniques are as varied as the stories and include numerous examples of mixed-media approaches. Nancy Erickson paints her images on fabric and then quilts them. Susan Shie and James Acord add many found objects and Acord's leather constructions to their unique stream-of-consciousness quilts. R Wagner, embroidery; Susan Whetstone-McCall, quilting; and Ann Winterling, rug hooking.
