Imagination to Image: Pictorialist Photographs from the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago

"Imagination to Image: Pictorialist Photographs from the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago" opens January 28, 2001 at The Montclair Art Museum, 3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair, New Jersey. This traveling exhibition explores the relationship between art and science by featuring 70 works from the recently rediscovered photography collection of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. The exhibition will be on view through April 15, 2001.

The roots of Pictorialism go back to the late 1800's when photography was just establishing itself as a widely used technology. The goal of the movement was to create photographs that were self-consciously works of art. The imagery often mimicked the traditions of drawing and painting. The exhibition utilizes outstanding Pictorialist works to explain many predominant photographic techniques and includes works from the 1930's by Edward Steichen, Clarence H. White, Adolph Fassbender, Eastman Kodak Co., Anne W. Brigman, Dorothea Lange, and others.

The Montclair Art Museum's presentation of the exhibition is organized by Gail Stavitsky, Chief Curator at MAM and will be accompanied by educational programming, lectures, workshops and family programs.

Concurrently on view in MAM's galleries will be Whitfield Lovell: Portrayals organized by the Neuberger Museum of Art. This traveling exhibition features a new body 17 charcoal on wood of works by artist Whitfield Lovell. His latest format includes figurative imagery of one or more persons drawn on old wooden planks set against a wall and surrounded by antique, found objects.
