Gerrit Engel: Buffalo Grain Elevators

Gerrit Engel: Buffalo Grain Elevators is
comprised of 30 large color photographs that reveal the timeless beauty
and inevitable decay of these historical structures. Since 
the early
1900s, America's industrial buildings - devoid of references to European
culture and history and symbolizing a new age and an emerging world economy
- have served as inspiration for European architects and modern architecture.
As a young German architect/photographer Gerrit Engel came to Buffalo in
the 1990s to assess the state of these icons. He discovered that they were
more than historical footnotes, but fantastic contemporary sculptures with
stories to tell and questions to ask. This is Gerrit Engel's first museum
exhibition in the United States. An illustrated brochure with an essay by
Assistant Curator Claire Schneider accompanies the exhibition, which will
