Julian Onderdonk is one of the most widely known and respected Texas artists, famous for his paintings of the beauty and mood evoked by any landscape. A member of a family of Texas painters -- his father, Robert Jenkins Onderdonk, painted four of the portraits in the Capitol's collection --, Julian studied art in New York at the Art Students League. One famous teacher, William Merritt Chase, had a profound impact on the artist's style: Chase painted outdoors, and encouraged his students to capture impressions of nature rather than labor over minute details. Julian died at the young age of 40 cutting short a prolific and important artistic career.
