Dave West: A Retrospective
"Dave West: A Retrospective" will be open from April 15 to June
11, 2000, with an
opening
reception on Sat., April 29, from 5 to 7 p.m.
This exhibition of Sioux City's own modern master will display more than forty works produced from the early 1960s to the present. West served as Sioux City Art Center Director from 1966 to 1972. This retrospective encompasses West's early abstract images through his more recent representational landscapes. The exhibition promises to be a major regional attraction. According
to the artist: "I long ago quit trying to fit into any particular style
or
school.
My reaction to nature is strong, as is my desire to paint it. My goal is
to capture the emotional content of my subject, whether it is landscape,
figure, or still life. Sometimes the works come out abstract, and other
times more objective, but the subject is always my feelings about nature
in the broadest sense. I do not paint for museum exhibitions or to decorate
wells. I want people who own my works to feel as passionate about the works
and the subject as I do." (left: Figure, 1980, acrylic
