The Utah Museum of Fine Arts Is Awarded $75,000 from the Henry Luce Foundation

Arts (UMFA) has received a generous two-year grant of $75,000 from the Henry Luce Foundation
which will be used to research and produce a catalogue highlighting the

"The UMFA is delighted and honored to be a recipient of a prestigious Luce Foundation American Collections Enhancement (ACE) grant. The grant will enable us to embark on a very active program in American art and American studies," said Frank Sanguinetti, director of the UMFA.
The American art collection of the UMFA currently includes more than 2,500 objects in various media such as painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, and decorative arts. It features works by many important American artists including Helen Frankenthaler, John Singer Sargent, Robert Arneson , John Singleton Copley, Benjamin West, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, James Rosenquist, Gilbert Stewart, Alex Katz, Robert Rauschenberg and Thomas Moran.
Dr. Mary Francey, Professor of Art History at the University of Utah, has been appointed to direct the project. Dr. Francey will research the collection and consult with other scholars on overall production of the catalogue. In addition, she will also identify ways in which the publication of the American collection can be used to support the University curricula, especially for undergraduate students.
The grant is being awarded through the Luce Foundation's American Collections Enhancement (ACE) initiative. Through the year 2000 this initiative will provide support to small and mid-sized museums with significant holdings of overall importance to the study of American art. This short-term program will highlight important collections that are not widely known, but should be.
Through the ACE initiative the foundation will actively identify qualified institutions and will assist approximately 50 museums across the country.
The Luce Foundation was established in 1936 by Henry R. Luce, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Time Inc. The work of the Luce Foundation, a private foundation, reflects the principles of four generations of the Luce family. Today the Luce Foundation is headed by Henry Luce III and has assets of approximately $1 billion.
