The Piper Jaffray Collection: Regional Expressions

The Sangre de Cristo Arts Center has the honor of showcasing The Piper Jaffray Collection: Regional Expressions in the Regional Gallery Feb. 5 through April 22, 2000. With artistic visions that encompass the world, the Piper Jaffray Companies Art Collection is a compendium of mediums, styles, themes and moods. The works range from traditional paintings and drawings to works in glass and fiber.

Begun in 1984, the collection is now over 300 works and serves two major purposes. It is the company's intention to support the cultural environment in the communities where the firm operates. And, by hanging the chosen works in the companies many offices, it reminds employees of the people and places they serve every day. In sharing its collection with these communities, the company affirms its commitment to supporting the artists and the cultural life of the region. But it does something even more important. These works of art bring the news -- no news could be more hopeful -- that the region is deeply blessed by lives of rich imagination. (left: Camel)

Chosen by company employees with guidance from Minneapolis Art Consultant Shelly Ross, the featured artists all claim roots in the Midwest, Mountain, Southwest and Pacific Coast states. They represent "the undeniable genius of the region." The artists are clearly influenced by some aspect of place such as history, geography or ambiance. The imposing verticals or sweeping horizontals of the landscape often shape their imagination. So, too, can regional styles of storytelling be reflected in the purely visual. Many of the pieces are remarkable for their friendliness and lack of pretension. They are what they are, and they invite viewers to make their acquaintance. (right: Flicker)

The public is invited to a free public reception with all the Arts Center's featured winter artists on Friday, Feb. 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Helen T. White Galleries at Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, 210 N. Santa Fe Ave. The reception is sponsored by US Bancorp/Piper Jaffray.
