Reflections: Artwork by Kevin Kutz

June 26, 2015 - October 10, 2015

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Loretto is presenting Reflections: Artwork by Kevin Kutz. Featuring 52 works, Reflections is a special loan exhibition that charts Kutz's evolution as an artist. The exhibition opens June 26, 2015 and will remain on view through October 10, 2015. (right: Kevin Kutz, My Bedford County, 1992-93, Oil on panel with quilted frame, 24 x 48 inches. Collection of Sally and John Hersh)

Kutz is one of the region's best known and best loved artists. A painter and innovator, Kutz ranges from traditional plein-air realism to dreamlike explorations of time, place and memory. Celebrating his native Bedford County with the same passion that brought fame to the Bucks County Impressionists, Kutz's landscapes and small-town views are at once beautiful essays in paint and deeply felt homages to his roots. In his portraits, there is a kind of psychological presence that bespeaks the artist's sympathetic interaction with the subject. The same sense of personal engagement characterizes Kutz's experimental works, which include carvings in wood, steel engravings, and 3-D assemblages.

Reflections: Artwork by Kevin Kutz explores the artist's career, from his journeyman years just out of college to the present. The exhibition gives an overview of his progress from one chapter of his life to another. It also reveals the many changes and directions that his art has undergone. With an emphasis on Kutz's remarkable creative diversity, the exhibition will contain surprises even for those who are familiar with the artist's work. Yet with its rich fund of visual poetry, reverie, and an occasional touch of humor, Reflections promises a satisfying experience that is sure to please everyone.
